ABOUT JAMES

Front Look to Side BW smaller.jpg

As a lifelong student of jazz:

It’s been my absolute privilege to study with some of the best: Ellis Marsalis, Peter Martin, Victor Atkins, and Garth Alper, to name a few. My studies also took me to some amazing schools, including The University of North Texas and The University of New Orleans. I hold a Master’s Degree in Jazz Studies, and I finished much of the coursework toward a Doctor of Arts Degree in Music Theory and Composition. I’ll always be a “tinkerer” in jazz, and I’m constantly pushing myself to grow as a player, and to discover new ways to help my students.

As a lifelong teacher:

I was a professor for many years, teaching such courses as Applied Jazz Piano, Jazz Combo, Music Theory I-IV, Eartraining and Sightsinging I-IV, Composition, and more. One of my most fulfilling vocations is private teaching, and I now maintain an active studio of select private students all over the world, via Skype. I’ve also authored 8 books and I keep busy with my YouTube Channel and my Facebook group, Jazz Piano Chat.

As a lifelong performer:

What an adventure! I’ve been blessed to play with a wide variety of great artists, including Lee Konitz, Randy Sabien, Doug Kershaw, Ralph Lalama, Carman, Jimmy Needham, and Teddy Geiger. In addition, I enjoy keeping busy regionally, playing with some of the finest musicians all around the DFW area.

But the really important stuff is:

My family is my most precious treasure. I live in the DFW area with my beautiful wife, Anne, and our five amazing kids.
